IMS prototype architecture

To identify the problems related with the deployment of an IMS platform, to evaluate the performance of IMS-related components, to implement different IMS/NGN service scenarios, an IMS prototype is being deployed in the IP technologies area within the EPC/IMS research activity "IMS-capable Core Network for enabling Next Generation Network services".

Our IMS prototype includes the following IMS entities: IMS Core (control functions and database), Presence Server, XCAP Server, Media Server, SIP Application Server, User Agent (UA) as shown in Figure. It is based on various available open source packages that have been slightly modified and configured to support interoperability between the IMS entities. Corresponding interoperability and conformance tests have been done.

To better validate IMS operation in close-to-real environment (through heterogeneous access networks), the IMS platform is being integrated with the EXTREME TestbedĀ®. In particular, the UA is connected to the deployed IMS prototype through two access technologies, namely UMTS/HSDA and WLAN IEEE 802.11.
